Facebook overtakes Google in the UK

Happy New Year 2011Happy New Year, dear reader! 2011 promises to be another fast-paced, roller coaster ride for marketers as the social web tightens its grip on ever-broader parts of our lives and the commercial competition to win our dwindling attention reaches boiling point. Last year we talked about social media, this year we’ll all be doing it. You heard it here first… Winking smile

And we kick off this year with news that Facebook has finally, albeit briefly, surpassed Google as the UK’s most visited web site. On Christmas Day, Facebook secured 10.5% of all internet visits, rocketing past Google on a mere 9.77%. I wrote about this topic back in August when it was predicted that Facebook would become the UK’s most visited web site sometime between June 2011 and March 2012. The latest data from Hitwise suggests that this prediction is still robust, even with some recent slowdown in Facebook’s relentless growth, and Hitwise’s own prediction that Google could remain on top for the foreseeable future:

Let’s see who’s right. With Facebook now valued at a cool $50bn and investors queuing up to buy a slice of the action, 2011 looks set to be a rewarding year for Mark Zuckerberg and his gang. I hope it is for you too.
