Wow! The WorldWide Telescope

This is extraordinary! Yesterday, Roy Gould, researcher at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics, and Microsoft’s Curtis Wong gave the first public preview of Microsoft’s new WorldWide Telescope. By combining a very clever rich visualisation environment with feeds from satellites and telescopes all over the world and the skies, Microsoft has created a comprehensive and interactive view of our universe.

It looks absolutely stunning. Watch the brief video at TED, then bookmark the new WorldWide Telescope web site for more details. WorldWide Telescope will be available for FREE download in Spring 2008. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

It makes me think that today’s kids are very privileged. If I’d had amazing technology like this when I was at school who knows how different a career path I might have followed. Fabulous work from Microsoft Research!
