The latest 2026 Gallup State of the Global Workplace report has some sobering headlines.
Global employee engagement has dropped to just 20%, marking the first time in history we’ve seen two consecutive years of decline:

Or to put it another way, 80% of employees do not feel fully engaged in their work.
This is more than an “HR problem”—it’s a $10 trillion economic catastrophe, draining the world of roughly 9% of its total GDP.
But here’s the most fascinating part: the technology to fix our productivity issues already exists. We’re spending billions on AI, yet 95% of organisations report zero measurable impact on their bottom line.
So, what’s actually going wrong? It’s not the tech; it’s the humans. Here are my top three takeaways from the report and some thoughts on how adopting a Future-Ready Mindset may help us turn the tide.
The Manager Engagement Crisis
For years, managers enjoyed an “engagement premium”—a boost in motivation simply from being in a lofty leadership position. That’s gone. Manager engagement has plummeted nine points since 2022. And, for the first time, leaders are only as engaged as the teams they lead:

- My Future-Ready Mindset take: Let’s stop trying to “future-proof” our teams and start “future-readying” them. A Future-Ready Mindset helps leaders move away from the thankless task of being a firefighter, and into a continuous cycle of iterative improvement. When you view change as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat, you can regain the agency needed to inspire others.
The AI Adoption Bottleneck
Gallup’s report finds that the strongest predictor of whether an employee will actually use AI is whether their direct manager actively champions it. Even the most sophisticated gen-AI is not enough when you’ve an indifferent leader.
- My Future-Ready Mindset take: I’m all about helping people discover the “human superpowers” needed to thrive alongside technology and to transform uncertainty into opportunity. Leaders with a Future-Ready Mindset don’t just “deploy” tech like a software update; they act as the motivational bridge, helping their teams spot improvements and turn bold digital ideas into reality.
The Top-Heavy Experience Gap
Here is the leadership paradox: leaders report high life evaluations (they’re “thriving”), yet they experience significantly worse days than those they lead! Leaders are far more likely to report daily stress, anger, and loneliness. High status is currently coming at a dangerous emotional cost.
- My Future-Ready Mindset take: Engagement is the perfect antidote to the emotional burden of leadership. Gallup found that engaged managers report negative emotions at lower rates. By fostering a Future-Ready Mindset, leaders create a sense of voice and agency that reduces social distance and isolation, allowing them to thrive both in their careers and their daily lives.
OK, where next?
We’re not the victims here. The future isn’t something that happens to us; it’s something we can create each day through our readiness to adapt. If you’re ready to bridge the engagement gap in your organisation, it’s time to shift your perspective.
